Compared to the past years, the situation of the Roma community is better, but the Roma continue to be the most discriminated against social group in Serbia – concluded a meeting held in Belgrade in April on the occasion of the International Roma Day.
Roma in Serbia are exposed to physical attacks, and because of poverty often decide to seek asylum in the EU. According to the 2013 Census of Population, some 140,000 Roma live in Serbia. According to the assessments of the local authorities, approximately 255,000 Roma live in 750 Roma settlements. The problems that the Roma face in the Western Balkans and in Turkey were also highlighted in the new report of the European Commission on Integration of Roma in EU, which calls on the accession countries to step up the efforts to include the Roma into the society. The recommendations on the measures for integration of Roma in EU Member States are said to be relevant also for the accession countries as they are part of the EU acquis.
