Among the freshmen enrolling at the Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics in Niš this year is Đorđina Halilković (19), a participant of the project “We Are Here Together – European Support for Roma Inclusion”, providing, inter alia, support to Roma children in education.
Đorđina notes she had considerable support from her mother in making the decision to enrol at the faculty, but having been one of the participants of the Roma inclusion project last year was also of great help for continued education. She had a mentor, who provided her with assistance in completing secondary school with the best possible results and a scholarship she used to pay for the costs of secondary school, and thereafter enrol at the faculty.
The project “We Are Here Together – European Support for Roma Inclusion” is financed by the European Union with EUR 4.8 million, implemented by the OSCE Mission to Serbia, in coordination with the Office for Human and Minority Rights and several ministries and non-government organizations.
Within the Programme of Dropout Prevention being implemented through this project, the right to scholarships was attained by 525 students during the last school year. According to the announcements by the Steering Committee of the project, scholarships should be provided this year for another 500 Roma secondary school students.
