Within the “Creation of tolerance and understanding towards the LGBT community in Serbian society” project the organization “Praxis” in partnership with Gayten-LGBT organization completed the “Sensitization of national and local media to the situation of trans* persons” project, as part of the realization of smaller campaigns implemented at the local level. The goal was to raise awareness about LGBT issues in the Republic of Serbia.
The analysis was done with 200 texts dealing with trans* issues that were published in the print media from May 15, until November 15, 2015. From the analysed texts 67.09% was written in neutral value context, close to 10% were with positive connotations while 22.15% had negative connotations. Most articles on trans* subjects were published by “Blic” while the paper “Danas” published the largest number of texts with positive connotations. More than one-third of the texts were written in a sensationalist manner. The person mentioned most in the articles covered by the analysis was civil society organization “Egal” activist, Helena Vuković.
As part of the implementation of the Project activities, “Praxis” and Gayten-LGBT have also created Media recommendations for reporting on trans* persons; these recommendations include defining the terminology used in the medical and public discourse context, guidelines for the use of adequate terminology, as well as the examples of unacceptable and offensive vocabulary.
