Among the 96 countries where 90% of the global population 60+ lives, Serbia ranks 78th according to the quality of life of the elderly and has fallen on this scale relative to the previous year. The 2014 Global Ageing Index published on 1 October at the International Day of the Elderly showed the highest quality of life of the elderly to be in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and the lowest to be in Afghanistan.
The world is ageing fast and by 2030, the number of 60+ inhabitants will exceed the number of children under the age of 10. The number of the elderly already exceeds the number of children under 5. There are 868 million persons over the age of 60 today, which is almost 12% of the global population. The number of elderly is estimated to exceed two billion or one fifth of the global population by mid –century, whereby the elderly 60+ will comprise more than 30% of the population in dozens of countries, including the largest part of Eastern Europe.
The Global Ageing Index should help the governments worldwide to adopt policies and institutional frameworks for improvement of the quality of life of the elderly.
