The transition to the digital system of broadcasting for TV programming in Serbia started on 15 April by shutting down the analog TV signal in Vršac, while the last analog transmitter will be shut down in mid-June. Digitalization will bring the viewers better quality of image and the ability to use additional services. Digitalization will also liberate a number of frequencies, the leasing of which is expected to bring profit to the state. It is unclear how digitalization will impact the work of local TV stations, who will receive a larger area for coverage and the option for more viewers, but also considerably stiffer competition.
Serbia will transition to digital broadcasting at the last moment, since it is obliged to do so by 17 June in accordance with the GE06 agreement it signed in Geneva, under the auspices of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The deadline is the same for all European countries, while earlier Serbia planned to transition to digital broadcasting by April 2012, in order to be harmonized with EU member states.
The test broadcasting of a digital TV signal in Serbia began on 21 March 2012. After completing digitalization, the digital signal will cover 95% of the territory of Serbia.
