A new survey shows that 5.9% of people in the European Union identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The highest number of people with LGBT identities in the EU are in Germany, and the lowest in Hungary. Women and young people identify more as members of the LGBT community.
Responding to the request to define their sexuality opting for one of the options – only heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, equally heterosexual and homosexual, mostly homosexual, only homosexual and asexual, 10% have identified with a category other than heterosexual.
This means that 4.1% of the respondents do not consider themselves either LGBT or heterosexual. In addition to this, another 12% of those surveyed among the 11,000 persons encompassed by the survey in the 28 EU members states refused to respond to the question.
The results of the survey by the German agency Dalia Research indicate a significantly higher number of the LGBT population than national surveys. Thus, according to data by the British Statistical Service, the LGB (without T) community in Britain in 2015 represented 1.7% of the total population. At the same time, the survey by Dalia finds that among the 1,104 surveyed Britons, 6.5% identify as LGB.
“The size of the LGBT community is very difficult to measure”, noted the Dalia agency in its notice.
