A cooperation agreement for joint action to implement measures for reconciling work and parenting was signed on 7 February between the Minister without Portfolio responsible for demography and population policies in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, and President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia (CCIS) Marko Čadež.
Upon signing the Agreement in the CCIS offices, Đukić-Dejanović warned that every year Serbia loses a small town of approximately 36,000 inhabitants as a consequence of the negative natural increase rate. As she pointed out, the demographic trends have been exceedingly negative since the middle of the last century, resulting in both demographic aging and depopulation in regions of Serbia, which inevitably leads to the weakening of the workforce.
Đukić-Dejanović reminded that a policy document was adopted to boost population growth in 2008 with the ultimate goal of contributing to balancing work and parenting. The signing of this Agreement with the CCIS representatives, she noted, is the first formal step in achieving this goal, i.e. in repairing work productivity and the parental function simultaneously.
Čadež underlined that Serbia’s declining population is not only a demographic, sociological and social issue, but also an economic one. It is in the employer’s interest to have satisfied employees who do their job well and know that there is no conflict between their roles as employees and as parents.
