The winners of the 2017 “Andjelka Milić” Award, presented by the Section for Feminist Research and Critical Studies on Masculinities (SEFEM), have been announced.
The “Andjelka Milić” Award has been established in order to promote the feminist production of contextualized knowledge, principally through original and relevant research, as well as its creative use and application in all spheres of social life in Serbia. SEFEM’s fundamental aim, on the one hand, was to recognise the values of this knowledge and the feminist-oriented creative actions, as well as to spread the message about the importance of gender equality, non-discrimination, non-violence and of overcoming misogyny and gender stereotypes and, on the other hand, to strengthen the modernisation and transformation processes in the Serbian society. With this award, SEFEM aims to identify and denote the values that have been not only pushed to the margin, but also disowned, ridiculed and dangerously endangered. Moreover, with the award, SEFEM wants to support continuity and historical memory, which are important factors for strengthening gender equality, as well as for transforming hierarchies based on patriarchal privileges and outdated gender roles.
Aleksandra Vladisavljević and Sanja Nikolin are among the winners, rewarded for their long-standing commitment in the field of gender equality as activists, experts and trainers, who have been successfully translating the feminist theory and research into concrete activities for empowering women and transforming gender inequalities. Their special contribution in recent years has been the improvement of the gender-sensitive budget analysis process and the integration of the gender aspect into the electronic form of the programme budget. They also contributed to the revision of the Serbian Budget System Law and the Law on the Budget in 2015 and 2016, by formulating amendments that resulted in the inclusion of the gender equality perspective in the very essence of the programme budget. In 2015 and 2016 alone, more than 300 employees of the Serbian Government attended training seminars for inclusion of the gender perspective in the budgeting process at the national, provincial and local levels, developed and held by Aleksandra and Sanja. Furthermore, as experts of the Women’s Parliamentary Network, they take the credit for a long list of amendments that have enhanced the financing of gender-sensitive programmes in all policy areas covered by the state budget.
