Women are most discriminated against social group, followed by Roma, persons with disabilities, the poor and the elderly show the results of a survey ”Attitude of Citizens to Discrimination in Serbia“ conducted by the Commissioner for Equality and UN Development Programme (UNDP).
More than 30% of respondents believe that discrimination is most pronounced in the area of employment. The survey showed stereotypes and prejudices to prevail in Serbia. The majority of citizens would not accept a member of ethnic minority in their family, 49% respondents agree with the statement that homosexuality is an ”illness that needs to be treated“, and 35% of citizens think that small religious communities ”steal souls from other people“.
The highest degree of ethnic distance exists towards the Albanians – 20% of respondents believe they should not be citizens of Serbia at all.
The fourth survey “Attitude of Citizens to Discrimination in Serbia“ was conducted by Centre for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID). The survey was conducted by face to face methodology on a random sample of 1,200 citizens over 15 in the period 21 – 28 November 2013.
