There was progress made in Serbia regarding the inclusion of women in the political and public life, but there are not enough of them in places of power and true influence on decision making, the participants of the conference “Women’s Platforms for the Development of Serbia” assessed.
Member of parliament and coordinator of the Women’s Parliamentary Network, Dubravka Filipovski, says that the goal is not quantity, but a division of power and responsibility with men, stating that the key issue is the reform of political parties, because in many of them the question of gender equality is merely a declarative issue. She stated that the facts and numbers indicate the problem is that men have occupied certain areas, such as finance and foreign policy, to such an extent that there is less room for women, for whom more room remains in education and social work, reports Tanjug.
The chairperson of the Board for Human and Minority Rights of the National Assembly of Serbia, Meho Omerović, says that a lot has been done for women’s empowerment, and that the Women’s Platform is a document that should additionally strengthen the position of women in our society.
The chairperson of the Fund for Political Excellence, Sonja Liht, said that, unfortunately, it is not enough for the women’s movement to be strong, but that women’s organizations need to change society. “This is the right moment for a women’s platform that should truly become the programme of all of society”, said Sonja Liht, and declared that without women there is no development, since they are the bearers of development.
