In the Case of Violence against Children and Peer Violence, Preventive Measures are the Most Important

Savet za prava detetaOn 7 November, the Minister without portfolio in the Government of the Republic of Serbia responsible for demography and population policy, Slavica Đukić Dejanović stated that the constitutive session of the Council for the Rights of the Child addressed the Strategy for Prevention and Protection of Children from Violence, which is scheduled for public discussion.

Đukić Dejanović, the President of the Council for the Rights of the Child, said that one of the key tasks is establishing a clear picture of what could be done with regard to the prevention of violence against children in the country, but also introducing the Council to the goals of sustainable development through the prism of rights and interests of the child.

She stated that one of the topics of the session was also the Protocol on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Children Working and/or Living on the Street, as well as sustainable development goals from the perspective of protection of the rights of the child.

Speaking about violence against children, and also about peer violence, Đukić Dejanović said that it was important to support the family, noting that decision-makers should not deal only with consequences, but they should address the causes of that type of violence.

The members of the Council for Protection of Rights of the Child are, among others, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlović who is also the President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality, and the Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights, Suzana Paunović.

Furthermore, the Council members include representatives from the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Ministry of Culture and Information, Ministry of Youth and Sport, Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-government, as well as representatives from the NGO sector and prominent experts in the field of children’s rights.
