Gordana GavrilovićThe regular annual conference “Local mechanisms for gender equality – implementation of the principle of gender equality at the local level” was held on 7 December at the Palace of Serbia.

The conference was organized by the Coordination Body for Gender Equality and the UN Women agency, with the support of the European Union Delegation to Serbia.

Gordana Gavrilović, advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Zorana Mihajlović, stated that during the previous year, since the last conference, an important project was initiated titled “Key Steps towards Gender Equality”, financed through the IPA programme and focused on the economic empowerment of women, the process of introducing gender responsible budgeting was continued, and the first national report on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention was submitted to the Grevio expert group.

Furthermore, an award has been established for the most gender sensitive company, with the aim of supporting the inclusion of female entrepreneurs into the supply chains of large companies, and a new Gender Equality Index has been produced.

She concluded that all local self-governments should have local activity plans for gender equality, and at least one person tasked with coordinating local institutions in this field.

The conference participants presented examples of good practices at the local level – the municipality of Tutin, organizing the first women’s entrepreneurship fair this year, Žitište signing the Joint Statement on Principles of Women’s Solidarity, while the representatives of Čačak and Svrljig talked about the good cooperation of local self-governments with the civil sector, the statement says.
