Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and chairperson of the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for gender equality, Zorana Mihajlović, stated this body has formed a working group for drafting the gender equality law, to be completed by the end of this year. Mihajlović, speaking at the session of the Committee for Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality of the Republic of Serbia, where the Special Report on the Discrimination of Women was presented, announced the forming of a working group for the harmonization of the criminal and family laws.
The chairman of the Committee for Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality of the National Assembly, Meho Omerović, assessed that Serbia has achieved a considerable improvement in combating discrimination, but in real life the status of women is far from what is guaranteed by law and conventions.
Omerović, noting that the harshest consequence of discrimination of women is violence, said that an important contribution to improving the status of women can be provided by the assembly committee and the Women’s Parliamentary Network.
The committee session was also attended by representatives of ministries, international organizations, embassies, the EU Delegation to Serbia, civil society, Women’s Parliamentary Network, director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Suzana Paunović, ombudsman Saša Janković and the commissioner for the protection of equality Nevena Petrušić.
