Local self-governments have been selected to receive first prize or a special commendation in four areas of competition as part of the first National annual competition for the selection of best practices in the application of the good governance principle at the local level for 2018.
The commission for the selection of best practice examples in the application of the principle of good governance at the local level has awarded prizes and special commendations for the following towns and municipalities:
- In the field “Efficiency and Effectiveness” the first prize was won by the city of Novi Pazar, while special commendations were issued to the municipality of Inđija and the city of Užice.
- In the field “Transparency and Public Participation in the Work of the Local Self-Government” the first prize was won by the municipality of Ruma, while special commendations in this field were given to the city of Pirot and the municipalities Veliko Gradište and Nova Varoš.
- In the field “Accountability and Rule of Law” the first prize was won by the municipality of Vlasotince.
- In the field “Equality and Non-Discrimination” the first prize was won by the city municipality of Vračar, while special commendations in this field were issued to the city of Pančevo and the municipalities Bečej and Raška.
The national competition for the selection of best practice examples in the field of applying the principles of good governance at the local level is being implemented as part of the project “Improvement of good governance at the local level”. The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities – Association of Towns and Municipalities of Serbia (SCTM), as part of the programme “Support of the Government of Switzerland to Municipal Development through Improving Good Governance and Social Inclusion – Swiss PRO” implemented by the United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS).
The total funds to be awarded to local self-governments with the best practice in applying the principle of good governance, as part of the National Competition, are USD 12,000.00. The winners in each of the four areas will gain the right to a financial rewards to the amount of USD 3,000.00. After the announcement and presentation of awards and commendations to the towns and municipalities whose applications have been chosen as best practice examples, the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities – Association of Towns and Municipalities of Serbia (SCTM) will conclude a grant agreement with the local self-governments that were awarded the funds.
