Democratic societies, especially those with ambitions of becoming part of the European Union, must observe the rights of LGBT population, and Serbia has made big progress in that direction over the past years, assessed the conference “The Future Belongs to Us: LGBT Rights on the Road to EU Accession”.
Teri Reintke, European Parliament member, member of the Greens, stressed that this institution firmly believes that the rights of sexual minorities are human rights and a lithmus test of the situation of freedoms in a society. “LGBT population deserves the same rights in public and in private life, for we can attain full emancipation only if LGBT community enjoys the same rights in the domain of family rights. There are many who oppose this in the Europeran Parliament also, but this is something that we must insist on” Reintke said.
The chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights Meho Omerović stressed that all the institutions in Serbia must ensure implementation of the Constitution and laws and guarantee observance of human and minority rights.
A two-day conference was organised by the organisation for human rights of lesbians Labris with the support of several German foundations.
