The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence entered into effect on 1 August 2014. On the occasion of this event, the Autonomous Women Centre published, on its website, an announcement stating this is in an important step in the history of womens’movement and a reminder what remains to be done in order to improve the position of women and their children – survivors of violence.
The Convention is a comprehensive instrument at the European level which recognizes violence agaist women, ratified by 13 states and signed by 23 states to date. The four significant themes of the Convention include prevention, protection and support to the victims, persecution and punishment as well as integrated policies and monitoring. Its full implementation that the state parties have committed to must be ensured in order to take efficient actions in combating violence against women.
