“Declaration on the Joint Platform of Civil Society for Monitoring the Negotiation Process of Serbia’s Accession to EU” has been presented at a conference which took place on 9 June 2014 in Belgrade.
The Declaration is the basis for the actions of civil society organisations in the process of Serbia’s EU accession negotiations. It is the result of work of representatives of twenty civil society organizations (CSOs).
The conference was organized by the Centre for European Integrations (CEI) and the Belgrade Open School, with support from the Foundation for Open Society in Serbia. The principles of transparency, openness and accountability, that is to say, inclusion of all social actors, all capacities of the population and the exchange of information have been emphasized at the conference as the basic principles during the complex negotiations with the EU.
The role of CSOs in the negotiations should be professional and advisory, and the Government of the Republic of Serbia should harmonize the principles for the quality and final results of the negotiations: the speed of integrations, democratic control of government and participation of all stakeholders in the process.
Slovenia was mentioned as a positive example was mentioned Slovenia, whereas Croatia, with a dominant principle of integration speed, had insufficient support from the citizens.
For the purpose of bringing the negotiation process closer to the general public, CSOs have launched the initiative “Negotiations about negotiations” (http://eupregovori.bos.rs/) relating to the active participation of Civil Society organisations in the process of negotiations with the EU.
