The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) presented on 30 January 2014 a report on the role of the civil society in EU – Serbia relations.
The report welcomes the efforts of Serbia related to reform of economy and institutions over the past decade, but recommends inter alia that the authorities organise more public debates and consultations with the civil society organisations in early phases of policy development as well as in implementation phases.
State secretaries of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the members of the EESC delegation met on 31 January to agree on future cooperation and on the model of appointment of Serbian representatives in the Joint Consultative Commitee – a body for implementation of the Agreement of Stabilisation which will involve the representatives of NGO sector, trade unions and employers from Serbia.
The meeting also discussed the key recommendations from the EESC Opinion ”The Role of the Civil Society in the EU-Serbia Relations“ of July 2013. It was noted that the overall social dialogue in Serbia needs to be enhanced.
