The former Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk took over the duty of President of the European Council on 1 December from the Belgian Herman Van Rompuy. Tusk is the first President of the Council coming from a former communist bloc country.
Like Van Rompuy, Tusk will preside over the summits of EU leaders meeting four times per year to determine the long-term goals and find solutions for the on-going crises, such as the financial problems that wracked Europe during the last several years, or this year’s Ukraine crisis.
Considering the high unemployment rate reaching record levels, as well as the economic division of the EU, Tusk said Europeans need a “determined decisiveness to stop the economic crisis”.
Among the challenges before Tusk, analysts listed the efforts of the Eurozone to overcome the crisis, UK’s threat of leaving the EU due to bloc-level immigration regulations, as well as insufficient EU unity in regards to its policy towards Russia.
