The European Parliament approved several requests for aid with a total value of EUR 126.7 million for remedying the consequences of the natural disasters hitting Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria in 2013 and 2014. Adopting the recommendation of the European Commission, the Parliament approved nearly half of the aid from the EU Solidarity Fund, i.e. EUR 60.2 million, to Serbia, the only non-EU country submitting a request. In adopting the decision, Serbia was treated as an EU member state.
The EU Solidarity Fund was established in 2002, aimed at providing aid to EU member states and countries preparing for accession, in cases of natural disasters. The annual budget of the Fund is EUR 500 million, while according to Commission data, it was activated 63 times in 24 countries, with a total of EUR 3.7 billion earmarked. Both the Parliament and the Council need to approve requests for aid from the Solidarity Fund.
