The share of persons aged 30 to 34 years who completed higher or high education in the EU is almost by one third higher than in Serbia, according to a report by the European Statistical Office Eurostat. EU started to measure this indicator in 2002, when 24% of the population aged 30 to 34 years had high or higher education, setting target for 2020 to increase that share up to at least 40%.
In 2013, the proportion of this population was 36.8% in the EU and 25.3% in Serbia.
According to the Labour Force Survey of 2013, in Serbia men still lead in education and only in the category of higher education there is an almost equal number of women. Thus, 40% of women of all ages have completed only primary school (or no school at all), which is the case for 28.9% of men.
Another important indicator for the education of young people is the share of early school leaving. Proportion of young people aged 18 to 24 who have dropped out of secondary education, or not even commenced it, was 17% in 2002, and 12% in 2013. The Labour Force Survey did not select this age group, and the most similar is the group from 20 to 24 years, where the share of people who completed primary education is 7.6%, which is better than the average in the EU.
