The Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, stated on 8 December that less than 1,000 boys and girls in Serbia were placed in institutions, whereby Serbia achieved the best result in Europe.
Opening the conference “Progress in the Process of Transition from Placing Beneficiaries in Institutions to Community Services in Serbia”, Vulin stated that foster families have relieved the institutions in Serbia to the greatest possible extent.
He noted that Serbia undertook the obligation, in accordance with the Law on Social Protection, to fully abolish the presence of children under three years of age in institutions by 2015. He stated that his was achieved, since less than 50 children of this age are in institutions. The Minister explained that most of the children are currently expecting to be received by foster families, noting that the remaining children have special needs and cannot be taken care of so easily.
Serbia has shown how much it cares, emphasized Vulin and assessed that, in regards to social protection, this work cannot be undertaken by a single ministry, but should involve all of society. He also expressed an expectation that the number of services offered to local communities will increase in the future, and added that none of this will be possible without the participation of local self-governments.
