France plans to introduce a penalty system in 2019 that would increase the costs of consumer goods with packaging made of non-recycled plastic, and the price of this could be paid by consumers. This was one of the steps within the plan to use only recycled plastic by 2025, stated the French Ministry of Environmental Protection.
According to the plan, the product with recycled plastic packaging will cost 10% less. France is currently recycling around 25% of plastic.
Single-use plastic bags have already been banned from supermarkets unless they can be recycled, which should encourage consumers to bring their own bags when shopping.
The French government also aims to increase taxes on trash in landfills while cutting taxes for recycling, hoping to address the growing problem of plastic found in oceans.
The production of plastic, mainly for packaging, has increased more than 40% globally over the past 10 years.
