Funds Awarded for Monitoring and Documenting the Discrimination Cases in Serbia

praxis_logoFive organisations received funds for performing a monitoring function and documenting the cases of discrimination in Serbia within the “Improving the legal and policy framework for achieving equality in Serbia and monitoring how they are applied in practice” project. This project is financed by the European Union and implemented by the Association of Citizens Praxis in cooperation with Equal Rights Trust from London and Sandžak Committee for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms.

The purpose of the funds, envisaged as sub-grants in an average amount of EUR 5,000, is to document cases of discrimination and inequality in Serbia that have not been thoroughly investigated, by collecting quantitative evidence of cases and types of discrimination, as well as the subjective experiences of victims of discrimination.

The selected civil society organizations will monitor and document cases of discrimination until January 2018 in the following areas:

  1. Da se zna! (Let it be known!) Will focus its work on the cases of discrimination towards the LGBT+ community in five cities in Serbia: Niš, Kragujevac, Novi Sad, Novi Bečej and Prokuplje.
  2. Roma Researchers will focus its work on the unemployed young Roma registered in the labour market in the South Bačka District, with particular emphasis on discrimination based on age, gender, degree of education, ethnicity and religion, disability and sexual orientation.
  3. NEOSTART will implement its activities in the Correctional Facility in Padinska Skela and the District Prison in Belgrade, their objective will be to identify cases of discrimination experienced by repeat offenders, more precisely individuals who were form released from prison in the past, and who have experienced some type of discrimination.
  4. CHRIS – The Network of Committees for Human Rights in Serbia will focus their work on discrimination against Roma women, who are also persons with disabilities, in the field of health and social protection, in the following cities in Serbia: Bujanovac, Vladičin Han, Vranje, Niš, Vlasotince, Lebane, Negotin, Zaječar, Bor, Valjevo, Lazarevac, Draginje, Novi Pazar, Prijepolje and Tutin.
  5. Association of students with disabilities will monitor the extent of discrimination against students with disabilities at state or private higher education institutions in Belgrade.
