Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlović stated on 14 October that, in the forthcoming period, our country would focus on creating an environment of equal employment conditions for all citizens.
During a break at the meeting titled “Promoting Gender Equality through Evidence-based Policy Making in Serbia”, in a statement to Tanjug news agency, Mihajlović highlighted that in Serbia women still did not have the same rights as men in employment. She noted that this was the case not only in Serbia, but also in the European Union, and reiterated that the Government was committed to changing this situation together with local governments and the civil sector.
Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport stated that the EU supported the introduction of the gender equality index in Serbia; this was a key instrument in policy development from the gender equality perspective in the process of European integration. Gender equality is one of the key EU principles, as well as the imperative for economic growth and social cohesion in any modern society, explained Davenport.
He also pointed out that the situation in the EU was not ideal in this respect, adding that women accounted for only four percent of the heads of large companies.
Head of Operations at the European Institute for Gender Equality Therese Murphy highlighted that, if Serbia implemented the gender equality index, it would be the first non-EU country to use it.
