The Expanded Edition of the Guide to the Europe 2020 Strategy was presented in Belgrade. According to its publisher, the European Movement in Serbia, it should support Serbia in its reforms, but also serve as instructions for resolving issues and achieving the goals that the European Union considers to be strategic. The participants noted that Serbia is an uninventive society where the significance of knowledge and education is in decline, and assessed that the Europe 2020 strategic framework is important for Serbia, as well as EU member states. The issues local self-governments in Serbia face were also noted; having a hard time surviving, having a lot of unemployed and losing their population, the “pledge of the development of the local community”. Likewise, the need for a national sustainable development strategy was emphasized.
With Europe 2020 the EU set as its priority “smart, sustainable, inclusive growth”, whereby inclusion is in regards to all of society, followed by an envisaged increase of employment from 69 to 75%, a reduction of emissions of harmful gases by 20%, and energy efficiency increased by the same amount.
The EU intends to reduce, by 2020, the percentage of early school dropout by 15%, to increase employment among citizens with higher education and to reduce the number of those living below the poverty line by 20%.
