The conference “Inclusion of Children from Vulnerable Groups in the Preschool System”, held on 25 April at Metropol Hotel in Belgrade, presented data on the status of child coverage by preschool education in Serbia. Data shows that during the previous decade there was significant progress made in Serbia in the field of preschool education, and the coverage of children aged three to five years is at 54%. However, we are still significantly below the average for European Union countries (where around 87% of this age group are covered). The coverage is particularly low regarding children from vulnerable groups (children living in rural areas 29%, poor children 22%, informal Roma settlements 8%, while there are no reliable data on the coverage of children with development impairments).
The conference represents the final event of the project “Inclusion of Children from Vulnerable Groups in the Preschool System”, implemented in cooperation with ten preschool institutions and local self-government units, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, by the Nordic Trust Fund and the World Bank office in Serbia.
The implementation of the project “Inclusive Preschool Education” was started in cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, the World Bank and Nordic Trust Fund, to be implemented with funds from a World Bank loan. The project will contribute to the improvement of availability and quality of preschool education.
