Men continue to be in the majority in the leading positions in corporations in the European Union, although women represent 60% of the EU university graduates. Nevertheless, the share of women in managements of the biggest companies is increasing, although they represent minimum 25% of the members of management boards in five EU Member States only. Women are the most numerous in Latvia and the least so in Malta. However, women are not promoted quickly to the highest managerial echelons and currently only three of the 100 biggest companies have women as their CEOs.
The draft directive of the Commission that should contribute to increasing the share of women among the independent management board members of the listed companies to 40% is now discussed in the EU Council, having received strong support of the European Parliament in November 2013.
