The population in Serbia continued to shrink in 2013 due to the negative population growth, as stated by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia on 30 June. The results show the number of births last year was lower, by some 35,000, than the number of deaths. In addition to the influx of migrants, the EU also records positive population growth and so the number of inhabitants is increasing. The annual loss of Serbia in population growth is more than 30,000 persons, meaning that a municipality the size of Ćuprija is “lost” each year, reads the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RSO) statement.
Only eight Serbian municipalities record a positive population growth. The highest birth rate is in the municipalities of Tutin, Novi Pazar, Preševo, Novi Sad and Savski Venac, the lowest being in Ražanj, Knić, Rekovac, Golubac and Gadžin Han. The highest number of babies is borne by mothers aged 25-29, with the average age of mothers being 29.1.
The average number of the deceased in Serbia is 74 and in the age interval 75 to 84. Looking by gender, more women than men pertaining to this age span died. The leading cause of death of men and women both are circulatory system illnesses, followed by cancer which is an ever more represented cause of death with a further upward trend.
