The greatest increase in the number of HIV cases during the past ten years in Europe was noted in Russia and the former Soviet republics, while in western Europe the number of cases remains constant, as indicated by the date provided by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Over three quarters of HIV cases in 2013 were registered in the former Soviet Union. In the west of Europe the situation is different, and the number of HIV cases in 2013 was essentially the same as in 2004. The report warns of insufficient prevention among the population segment with an increased risk of infection.
The report data are in regards to 53 countries, populated by nearly 900 million people. More than a third of their citizens infected by HIV, or 36%, are in their thirties.
There are 1,931 persons with HIV living in Serbia, with assessments of another 1,100 persons being infected without being registered, as indicated by data from the Institute of Public Health “Milan Jovanović Batut”, published on the occasion of the World AIDS Day. According to Institute data, the most frequent method of transmission is still unprotected sexual relations – around 80%.
