Aiming to prevent the throwing away of food, numerous Asian restaurants in Germany started charging penalties to guests who do not “clean their plates” Restaurant owners charge an euro or two more for those who order or take from buffet tables more than they can eat.
Although Germans sort their waste carefully, they are not particularly careful regarding what they throw away, as shown through a survey by the University in Stuttgart, conducted for the Federal Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
Every German throws away on average 225 grams of food per day, with only one third truly representing waste. The survey also showed that every citizen of Germany throws away 235 euros worth of food every year.
The schemes applied by restaurant owners not only prevent the throwing away of food, but also help those in need. Thus the owner of one Asian food restaurant decided not to pocket the approximately 1,000 euros of penalties for food left on the plate, donating it instead to charity.
