On Wednesday, 22 July, the House of Commons of the Polish Parliament adopted the Gender Accordance Act, the first law of its kind on accepting gender identity in that country.
Although Poland has a lengthy history regarding legal acceptance of gender identity dating from 1960, the process never lead to legalization, and there were confusing court proceedings. This Gender Accordance Act envisages that no one other than the person submitting the request is included in the process of gender accordance. To submit for gender accordance the submitter must meet three required conditions, that they are a citizen of Poland, that they are unmarried, and present two independent confirmations, no older than 12 months, that they are the person with the gender identity legally assigned, issued by either clinical psychologists who are also sexologists, or psychiatrists or sexologists who are also doctors.
The application is considered by the regional court of Lodz (also the only court to receive such applications) within a three-month period from the date of submittal and legal accordance will be provided without any medical intervention, including hormonal therapy. Trans persons will also receive a new extract from the registry of births and new documents confirming their education and work history.
