In terms of gender equality, Serbia ranks 54th on the new World Economic Forum list of 142 countries, which is a decline compared to 2013, when it ranked 42nd of 136 countries. In 2014, the leaders in gender equality are Iceland, Finland and Norway, while the gap between men and women is the widest in Yemen. According to the Forum’s estimate, achieving equality between men and women in the workplace will take another eight decades.
“Much of the progress on gender equality over the last 10 years has come from more women entering politics and the workforce. While more women and more men have joined the workforce over the last decade, more women than men entered the labor force in 49 countries”, stated Saadia Zahidi, one of the authors of the report and the leader of the Gender Parity Programme at the Forum.
Countries are ranked by their capacity to reduce the gaps between men and women in four key areas – economy, politics, education and health care.
