Serbia Shows Dedication to Protecting Human Rights

Published 29.06.2018.

Savet za ljudska prava UNThe Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia stated on 29 June that the UN Human Rights council adopted the Working Group Report on the Universal Periodic Review for the Republic of Serbia at its 38th session in Geneva.

Serbia was represented at the adoption of the final report by the Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights Suzana Paunović and the Head of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Dejan Zlatanović.

The report by the Working Group of the UPR Human Rights Council for Serbia states that our country has shown dedication to the protection of human rights through the way it prepared and participated for the Third Cycle of UPR.

Paunović assessed that the best indicator of this claim is the strengthening of institutional capacities in preparation for the entire process, the strengthening of the reporting process itself, the inclusion of all relevant local stakeholders in preparations for the Third Cycle, and the high degree of cooperation achieved among them.

She said that in the future Serbia will endeavour to link the reporting process towards United Nations treaty bodies with Sustainable Development Goals, and it will remain committed to the Universal Periodic Review and cooperation with the UN Human Rights Council.

Serbia completed the Third Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January this year, receiving 190 recommendations from UN member states through this process, with 175 accepted, and 15 noted.

Paunović emphasized that the UN Human Rights council particularly noted the importance of the established Government Council for Monitoring the Implementation of Recommendations by UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies, with its work significantly facilitating the drafting of Serbia’s report for this cycle of the UPR.

Serbia is the only country in the region and one of the few countries worldwide that has a systematic method of monitoring all UN recommendations, commended by the UN Human Rights Council.
