On 1 July Slovakia took over the six-month presidency of the European Union from Holland. It will be Slovakia’s first presidency, and the 116th rotating presidency of the EU.
Bratislava defined its EU presidency programme around four thematic blocks – economy, internal market, creating a sustainable migrant and asylum policy, as well as the development of a globally engaged Europe that will work on the future of the enlargement process, but overcoming the divisions of Europe will be the main goal of the Slovakian presidency of the EU, as stated by the State Secretary for European Affairs of Slovakia Ivan Korčok.
During the next six months, Slovakia as the presiding country will lead the sessions at all levels of the Council of EU and care about forming European legislation from the expert, to the ministerial level. One of the first tasks of Slovakia as the presiding member state will be organizing an EU summit in Bratislava on 16 September, where the leaders of the 27 member states will discuss the future of the Union after Brexit.
