The opening of the Telecenter for Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Persons was made possible by donations from the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs. Minister Aleksandar Vulin, speaking on the occasion, noted that persons with disabilities may not be viewed through what they cannot do, but what they can do.
“When the state says that persons with disabilities are not a burden, but a part of society, and that we owe them to make it possible for them to be an equal part of society, this is proof that we are doing so, that it is so, that we think so and do so. Thus, the only handicap a deaf or hearing-impaired person has in communication with the everyday world is fully eliminated”, said Vulin.
Vulin emphasized that activities for the implementation lasted a long time, and that the Telecenter is the way to realize and implement the Law on Sign Language.
The General Director of Telenor Serbia, Ove Fredheim, said he is proud of his company using its abilities and technology to enable the social inclusion of persons with impaired hearing across Serbia.
The Telecenter will work 24 hours per day, seven days a week, and will connect all members of 44 deaf and hearing-impaired organizations with emergency services, police and firefighters.
