On Friday 21 July 2017, the “Improvement of the Quality of Urban Planning through Inclusion” roundtable was held at the premises of the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM) in Belgrade.
The roundtable was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, Sector for Spatial and Urban Planning. The participants of the roundtable were the representatives of local self-governments (members of the SCTM Committee on Urban Planning and Construction and leading urbanists), public urban companies, independent institutions (Ombudsman of the Republic of Serbia, Autonomous Province of Vojvodina Ombudsman), and civil society organisations, as well as inclusion and gender equality experts.
The roundtable was opened by Assistant Minister Đorđe Milić, who said that the topic of urban planning quality improvement would be mostly addressed through the future Strategy for Urban Development. Dr Siniša Trkulja, a representative from the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, spoke about inclusion as a topic which has a high position on the global agenda for urban development. The creation of inclusive cities is a task for local and national governments because it derives from the 11th Goal of sustainable development of the UN.
Three aspects of inclusion in urban development which were discussed during the roundtable were: gender equality, the inclusion of vulnerable groups and the improvement of accessibility.
