According to the survey done by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia on the rights of persons deprived of liberty, the main issues of the prison system in Serbia are overcrowding, an inadequate number of security personnel, an inadequate healthcare system and the fact that the educators are also performing tasks of commissioners for alternative sanctions.
The need for close cooperation between the public and civil sector regarding the prison system reform was highlighted during the presentation of the results. The Ombudsman representative noted the similarities between their findings and the ones from the Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia report, particularly regarding the treatment of convicts.
The “Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty in Serbian Prison System” report was presented on June 27, in light of the International day in Support of Victims of Torture. This Report contains the results of 19 monitoring visits to 14 prisons during a period of 30 months.
