The Trans Murder Monitoring Project 2014 by the Transgender Europe organization shows 226 trans persons were killed during the past 12 months. Since January 2008, when the project started, 1.612 trans persons were murdered.
The Trans Murder Monitoring project (TMM, Project of Monitoring Murder Cases of Trans Persons) was initiated in April 2009, and it systematically monitors, collects and analyses reports on reported cases of murder of trans persons worldwide. New data regarding the results first published in July 2009 are published on the project website Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide, twice per year in the form of tables, lists of names and maps.
Each November, the Transgender Europe organization publishes a special update of TMM results on the International Day of Remembrance of Transphobia Victims, in order to help activists worldwide increase public awareness in regards to hate crimes committed against trans persons. The monitoring project was developed into a research project entitled Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT). TvT is a comparative, qualitative-quantitative, on-going research project, providing an overview of the situation with human rights for trans persons in various parts of the world, providing useful data and developing tools for advocacy in international institutions, organizations working in human rights, the trans movement and the public.
In November 2012, the organization Transgender Europe published the report TRANSRESPECT VERSUS TRANSPHOBIA WORLDWIDE – A Comparative Overview of the Human Rights Situation of Gender-Variant/Trans People, working on and contextualizing the key findings of the TvT project. The report is available here.
