The Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Unit of the Government of the Republic of Serbia (SIPRU) has published the Transition Guide for Trans Persons in Serbia, which was prepared in collaboration with the organisation Geten, the Centre for the Rights of LGBTIQA Persons.
The Guide is intended for trans persons in Serbia, everyone exploring and re-examining their gender identity and expression, and people who want to learn about the topic of transgenderism and transition, since the terms gender/gendered and identity/transgenderism are becoming increasingly present in public discourse as terms which emphasise individuality.
Transgenderism, social, legal and medical transition, as well as protection mechanisms against discrimination and violence, are the most significant issues faced by transgender people in Serbia today. Steps towards legal and medical transition in Serbia are still not straightforward and clearly defined.
According to the results of the survey on the needs of transgender people in Serbia, which was conducted by Geten in 2019, only every third transgender person (30.1%) is aware of their rights and protection mechanisms provided by government institutions and civil society organisations.
The Guide provides answers to key dilemmas about transgenderism, explains the most important aspects and phases of transition (social, legal, medical), with a special overview of existing procedures in the Republic of Serbia. Furthermore, this publication presents the most important mechanisms of protection against various forms of discrimination and violence, as well as guidelines for action in case of inadequate conduct of public authorities.
In addition to providing useful and practical advice to trans people in Serbia, this Guide aims to encourage all readers to view gender as a fluid category, without strict boundaries and clear binary divisions.
