The unemployment rate in Serbia in the second quarter of 2014 amounted to 20.3%. Although according to the Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate dropped by 3.8% relative to April 2013, it was still twice as high as in the EU. According to the Eurostat data for the month of June, only Spain and Greece have higher unemployment rates than Serbia.
Of the employed, 21.2% are the so called informally employed including those working in unregistered enterprises; in registered enterprises without a valid labour contract and social and pension insurance; as well as the unpaid helping household members. The share of persons working on the black market increased by 0.7 % points relative to the first quarter and by 3% relative to April 2013. Unemployment rate was the lowest in the region of Belgrade – 18.3%, and the highest in Southern and Eastern Serbia – 23.3%.
The unemployment rate in Serbia reached the level of 39.5% – an increase from 38.4% in the first quarter and 36.3% in April 2013. The Labour Force Survey was conducted on a sample of 8,222 households in May 2014.
