On July 18, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić announced that Chapters 23 and 24 were opened at the Third Intergovernmental Conference on the Accession of the Republic of Serbia to the EU, which represented an acknowledgement of the country and its progress.
He expressed sincere gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia Miroslav Lajčak, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn and other European friends, particularly mentioning Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who supported Serbia’s European path.
Mr Vučic stated that they were aware of the difficulties and obstacles that they would have to face, especially in the preparation of those two Chapters, but that they were also determined to fulfil the expectations and deliver results.
Mr Lajčak said that the opening of Chapters showed considerable progress in bringing Serbia closer to the Union and that that sent an important message – if Serbia achieved all goals, it would make progress in the enlargement process.
Hahn stated that the opening of Chapters 23 and 24 marked an important moment for the European Union and Serbia, noting that the pace of accession would be determined by Serbia.
“This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of Serbia’s progress. A lot of work has been done, and the Serbian Government, administration and civil society representatives have shown a dedicated commitment to preparing a robust, credible reform plan towards the modernization of Serbia to the benefit of its citizens,” said Hahn.
The rule of law is essential for the citizens to believe in good governance, he stressed and commended the progress made in Serbia.
