In an effort to enhance the legislative process, the European Commission could withdraw the draft Directive on Maternity Leave since the adoption thereof is taking several years. The European Parliament adopted this Directive in its first reading in 2010, but the EU Council of Ministers has not been able to reach an agreement on it for four years now. The Directive should enhance the rights of women by introducing paid maternity leave of 20 weeks at the level of EU and protecting women from job loss. The organisations for protection of women’ rights have criticized sharply the announcement of withdrawal of this directive.
The draft Directive on Maternity Leave provides for 20 weeks of leave, protects women from loss of jobs after taking the maternity leave, expands the rights of women working as household help and mothers who adopt children, and foresees a 2-week absence with full pay for the fathers.
