The Secretary General of the European Movement in Serbia Maja Bobić assessed on 18 October that the tempo of opening negotiation chapters on EU membership has not been sufficiently dynamic thus far. Speaking at an event on the process of EU membership negotiation, she said that the coming report by the European Commission on Serbia’s progress towards the EU will provide indications on whether another three chapters can be opened. The event stated that before attaining membership Serbia has the obligation to harmonize its foreign policy with that of Europe, and the issue could gain significance with the opening of Chapter 31 on foreign and security policy, or if any member state assesses it to be required.
Maja Bobić assessed that even though EU pressure is more effective, “domestic” pressure is more important for reforms.
As a key deficiency she noted that lack of consensus in Serbia regarding EU membership, despite the support of the majority of parliamentary parties for the process.
