Latvia assumed EU presidency on 1 January, and during the next six months its priorities will be competitiveness and economic growth, using digital potential for EU development and strengthening the role of the Union as a global player. Considering the current geopolitical situation, one of the key issues of EU foreign policy during the Latvian presidency will be relations with Russia. During its presidency Latvia will organize around 200 meetings and conferences, including political meetings at the highest level, and the benefit from the presidency for the economy of this Baltic country is estimated to be 64.5 million EUR.
One of the key events will be the Eastern Partnership Summit, with the relevant conferences, in May 2015 in Riga, and ten informal EU minister meetings are envisaged, along with the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) of education ministers. The organization of the Digital Agenda Assembly, European Conference on Standardization, Social Partners Forum and Week of Health was also planned.
Preparing for the EU presidency, during the past year and a half, Latvia trained over a thousand public servants for tasks related to the presidency.
Latvia took over the EU presidency from Italy, and at the end of its term will hand it over to Luxemburg.
