Announcing the first EU presidency of Malta since it joined the Union in 2004, the official of this Mediterranean country assessed that the EU must be flexible in taking care of the various needs of member states and renew faith in the European project. During Malta’s EU presidency in the first half of 2017 Britain is expected to invoke Article 50 of the EU Treaty to start negotiations on leaving the EU, while at the same time parliamentary elections will be held in the Netherlands and presidential elections in France. The chairman of the EC is certain that Malta’s EU presidency will be successful, since this small country will not place domestic problems at the top of the agenda.
Reacting to the fears and inequality felt by Europeans regarding national responses to migration, the priorities of Malta’s EU presidency will be security and economy, said the official of the smallest EU member state.
Malta will also host a summit on 3 February where the discussion initiated in Bratislava will continue, paving the way for building a new vision of the Union before the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in March.
Along with social inclusion, migration, security, naval policy and single market, this Mediterranean country with a population under half a million, also plans to focus on neighbourhood policies.
