The EU remains committed to the enlargement policy and no compromises will be made in this process, it was concluded at the fourth Belgrade Security Forum held on 1 October. It was stated that it will take several decades for the countries in the region to attain the level of development that the present EU members reached in centuries but that the Western Balkans should not be perceived as outskirts of the EU. The participants of the conference concluded that the countries neighbouring the EU are entitled to choose their own way by themselves but that Russia is an important strategic partner of the Union and that common grounds with this country must be found. The Forum also presented the research of the German Marshall Fund that proved the citizens of European countries seek a more independent approach to Trans Atlantic relations, while the Americans feel it better that the burden be shared.
At a conference organised by the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, the European Movement in Serbia and the Belgrade Center for Security Policy it was said that the enlargment policy will not compromises but that everyone must fulfill their obligations. In the case of the acceeding countries, these are the Copenhagen criteria.
