The Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlović stated on 24 February that women victims of family violence should believe in the system and report such cases.
Following her meeting with representatives of the association for protection and support for women victims of violence, Mihajlović reiterated that during the past five years 152 women were killed as a result of family violence, and noted that this kind of violence needs to be prevented.
She sent a message to women that they should report violence regardless of the amount of problems they face, and emphasized that women need to gain trust in the institutions.
Mihajlović assessed that for all that was done until now in preventing violence against women gratitude should be given primarily to the non-government sector. According to her, non-government associations made a large step forward, and the goal of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality is to work with the non-government sector in combatting this type of violence.
