“Serbia after Brexit – where citizens see Serbia” survey conducted by the Institute for European Affairs shows that the majority of citizens in Serbia (53%) still think that, in spite of Great Britain leaving the EU, the European integration process should continue, while the number of young people opposing this idea is rising.
At the same time, 82% of surveyed citizens are against Serbia’s NATO membership, while 80% thinks that the independence of Kosovo and Metohija should not be recognised even if it were a condition for joining the EU. The largest percentage sees Russia as Serbia’s friend, while a fifth of those surveyed considers Croatia the enemy.
On July 28, Tibor Moldvai, a political scientist at the Institute for European Affairs said that 51% of young people, 18 to 29 years old, was in favour of ending European integration, while 43% thought that it should continue.
While presenting the results, Naim Leo Beširi, from the Institute for European Affairs, said that citizens didn’t have enough information about Serbia’s European integration.
The survey was conducted from June 28 to July 6; it included 1,007 respondents (18 and older) from Serbia, not including Kosovo and Metohija. The data were collected via a telephone survey. It was stated that there were slightly more women than men among the respondents. Around half of the people surveyed stated they had completed only elementary or secondary education.
